Setting your Location in Microsoft Teams

A professional man uses a computer in an office setting, navigating Microsoft Teams while setting his location for efficient collaboration.

Have you ever wondered if your teammate is at home in their pyjamas or sitting in the office next door? If you want to know, and you can’t be bothered to get up and walk to their office, this little Microsoft Teams feature might just help, although it won’t do anything for your step count!

Microsoft 365 has a location-aware feature that adds a whole new level to scheduling. Ok, that’s going a bit far, but it does help by letting you know where your people are at. Not only can you check availability, but now you can let everyone know whether you’re in the office or working remotely.

You can set your location for the day and display it for your colleagues so they’ll know if they should message you or stop by your desk with a coffee. If your work hours vary, or if you do a hybrid schedule, this feature is perfect for keeping things clear without all the back and forth messaging.

How to Set Your Location in Microsoft Teams

  1. Click your profile picture in the top right corner of Teams.
  2. Click on Set work location.
  3. Choose your location and watch as it broadcasts to your colleagues with all the detail of a weather report.
  4. While you’re here, you can also set up a Status message.
  5. Click away from the drop down list to activate.

That’s all there is to it. Now when your team members hover their mouse over your profile picture, they’ll see exactly where you are and when—no crystal ball needed!

The image shows a Microsoft Teams profile with status "Available," and work hours set from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and an arrow pointing to the location icon.

Bonus Tip: If you work with Microsoft Teams, and you want to set your work hours and location more permanently, open Outlook, then go to File > Options > Calendar. In the dialog box, click the Work hours and location button and set your preferences.
