Customised computer training in Microsoft, Adobe and other Software

WordPress Training Course

WordPress is an online, open source website creation tool written in PHP. But in non-geek speak, it’s probably the easiest and most powerful blogging and website content management system (CMS) in existence today.

Initially, it was largely associated with blogs as its main functionality was to allow easy blog experience. Yet, over time, its developers expanded its functionality to allow the creation of more sophisticated websites and grew it into a content management system rather than a blogging tool, and today more than 28% of all website on the internet run on WordPress.

WordPress is considered the easiest to use CMS thanks to a very friendly interface. It also has an amazing number of plugins which allow extension of its functionality in various possible ways.

Keystroke Learning’s WordPress courses can take you from being a beginner to an advanced user.

Furthermore, skilled WordPress trainers with many years of experience led our courses. Our hands-on Full Day, Half Day, Workshop and Live Online Training courses mean that you will leave with practical experience including useful tips and tricks.

WordPress FAQ

Who uses WordPress?

WordPress is the most popular CMS (Content Management System) in the world and is used by nearly 75 million websites. According to WordPress, more than 409 million people view billions of pages each month and users produce nearly 70 million new posts every month. It also powers more than 28% of the world’s websites.

WordPress began as a blogging and publishing platform, but it has evolved to become far more. There are thousands of widgets, plugins and themes now available, that can be used at any level from a single person, a small business or the world’s largest publishers.

Key features of WordPress:

  • Open Source
  • Highly Customisable
  • Lower Setup and Maintenance costs
  • Not just for Developers
  • Huge Market of Themes and Plugins

These are just some of the features available in WordPress, but of course there are many more.

Should I buy a WordPress for Dummies book or attend a Training Course?

Have you ever wondered why the Dummies books are so popular? Well, it’s probably because so many of us are self-taught, using Google to find out how to use a function, or we are shown how to use software by someone at work. Although this can be useful, it also means we tend to spend a lot of time with trial and error, or we are just picking up somebody else’s bad habits. Trial and error unfortunately involves a lot of error, and the bad habits you pick up will probably be passed on to the next person, so soon they spread across the business, meaning entire teams can end up working inefficiently.

At this point, you might head to the bookstore or do an online search to find a WordPress for Dummies book to help solve some of those tricky issues. That’s a step in the right direction, and we sometimes use reference manuals ourselves. The problem is that trying to learn by trial and error may cost you many times the cost of a good training course.

Our WordPress courses are designed to target the key features and tools included in the various applications to help you get back to work and apply them right away.

Why should I attend a WordPress Training Course?

Attending a WordPress with Keystroke Learning will show you how to use the most efficient methods to achieve your daily tasks. Not only that, but you will discover best practices and shortcuts to make your business tasks even quicker, so you can get on with your day. Our goal is to help you get to the point where you are focussed on the task at hand rather than the tool you are using.

Typically, one of our experienced trainers will walk you through the features and functions of the software, then you will try them out on your own, with tips and guidance on getting the best out of the features. We also encourage participants to ask lots of questions to help you get the most out of your learning experience.

You’ll receive a manual to take away at the end of the course, as well as exercise files so you can practice later, or just to jog your memory when you need.

Is it best to do a full day or a half day course?

Well, it all depends on your particular training requirements and the amount of time you have available. A half day course will target a smaller number of topics, while a full day course allows time to cover more. Either way, the training course will provide in depth coverage of the features you need to learn, while allowing time for questions and interaction. Your decision should be based on the specific topics you want to cover and the time you have.

Can I use Markdown in WordPress?

You betcha! Many WordPress users spend plenty of time writing content for their site. WordPress developers have worked hard to improve the writing experience in WordPress.

WordPress comes with a whole range of keyboard shortcuts that you can use to write faster. You can also use Markdown with formatting shortcuts. Just type the formatting shortcuts and WordPress will convert them into HTML.

Some standard Markdown shortcuts are:
Typing * or – will start an unordered list.
Typing 1. or 1) will start an ordered list.
Typing # will transform into h1. ## for h2, ### for h3 and so on.
Typing > will transform into blockquote.

Can I embed content from YouTube into my WordPress site?

Yes, WordPress automatically embeds content from popular websites like YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, etc. All you need to do is paste a URL from one of the supported sites and WordPress will automatically embed it for you.

Since WordPress 4.4, all WordPress sites have become oEmbed service providers themselves. This means you can simply paste a URL from another WordPress site into your post and WordPress embeds the post for you.

I just need to do a quick image edit, do I need to go to Photoshop or can I do it in WordPress?

WordPress makes it easy to add images to your posts and pages. But what you may not know is that WordPress also comes with some basic image editing features.

Just go to the Media > Library page and then select any image. From the image details popup menu, you can click on the Edit Image button.

Once you are in image editing mode, you can crop, rotate, and resize an image. You can also flip an image in either horizontal or vertical directions. These image editing options are handy when you just need to quickly crop or resize a large image file directly from WordPress.

Can I delay the publishing of a post?

If you don’t want to publish a post right away, you can schedule it to appear at some time in the future. WordPress supports post scheduling – this option can be found in the Publish panel next to the visual editor. You will need to click the Edit link next to Publish.

This opens several date options. Simply specify a date (or time) in the future, and click on the OK button, and WordPress will schedule your post.

I keep forgetting to assign posts to a category. Is there a way to fix this?

It’s easy to forget to assign a post to a category, in which case WordPress will publish it as “uncategorized” by default. This can make your website look slightly amateurish.

You can fix this by updating the default post category. To do this, first create a new category by selecting Posts > Categories > Add New Category.

Next, go to Settings > Writing.

In the Default Post Category option, you can now select your newly created category from the drop-down menu. Save the changes and you’re done.
